Summary

We are theoretically studying the interaction between an ultrashort
pulse train and two- and three-level atoms. Our interest lies on the
investigation of how the coherent accumulation of excitation between
successive pulses influences their propagation through the medium.
Due to this coherent accumulation of excitation, each individual pulse
will find the medium in a different initial condition from the previous
pulse. Absorption and amplification of the pulses can be observed in
a two-level system. For a three-level system (Lambda configuration),
the coherent accumulation of excitation between the two ground states
leads to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of the pulses
in the train. Another interest is to use an ultrashort pulse train in the
spectroscopy of atomic dressed-states, as well as in the generation of
a coherent superposition of such states.
