In this talk I will show how the AdS/CFT correspondence has shed some light into the novel physics of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma formed in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. I will discuss in detail how the AdS/CFT correspondence has been used to understand the surprising fluid properties of the quark-gluon plasma, which is thought to be the (hottest) most perfect fluid ever created in the laboratory.
