Give me five!!!!

Down Beat had a section where they asked musicians to list the five favorite CDs they would take to a desert island with them. In the film High Fidelity the owner of a record shop (played by John Cusak) used all the time to list his five most important everything. So I ask, what is you list? Don’t rush, take you time.

Que alegria,
Wayne Shorter is back with a new album, Alegria,

Your love life is not well,
a new album was put together featuring songs for the broken hearted, the album called When Love Goes Wrong is a compilation of those tunes thatalk about relationships that did not work, it features the greats, Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday and other, less known greats like Johnny Hartman, Peggy Lee, Billy Eckentine and Helen Merril, most recordings are from the 50ths and 60ths. The liner notes state “If you have been dunped by you love, listening to this ds can help or can make things worse”. Well, I say, take a shot of whisky, dim the lights and enjoy.

What was Charlie Parker doing from 1940 to 1948?
A Studio Cronicle, a new compilation done by Ted Kendall for the label JSP Records, London has put together in a five cds set, almost all the studio recordings Charlie Parker produced in the period 1940 to 1948. This does not mean that all material here is of technical quality as you might expect. Privet recordings are notoriously variable and Bird’s recordings were usuallymade for small labels, sometimes under extreme difficult conditions. Dificulties aside, the importance of this exercise is the chance to witness this tornado passing through the landscape of jazz, changing everything in its path. It starts in Wichita, Dallas Kansas All the way to new York. It includes the long Holywood period. This features the collaboration with Dizzy Gillespie, Sara Vaughan in 45, Miles Davies in 45 and 47. After 1948 Charlie Parker signed with Norman Granz and on the brink o f commercial success, but heroin was about to come back into Bird’s life….

Ballad Time

I love ballads, I like to listen and love to play tem. For me the best ever Ballads album is Ballads by John Coltrane(*), of course feature in my top five best ever albums. This album epitomizes the stile. Many other followed and we shall talk about many at this spot but to start off nothing better than a tribute to John Coltrane and his Ballads. Karin Alison has done just that in her tribute to Coltranes Ballads entitled …. she sings the ballads with the help of Bob Berg on tenor saxophone. It is a very beautiful tribute to the man and the album that is a masterpiece.
